OCREVUS® Infusion Therapy for Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune and neurodegenerative disorder of the central nervous system, affecting the brain and spinal cord. While the diagnosis can be devastating for patients, there are better treatment options than ever that are now available.
Your neurologist may prescribe OCREVUS® infusion therapy for multiple sclerosis to manage the symptoms and progression of your condition. At CPS Infusion, with locations serving the greater Atlanta area, we provide this treatment in a comfortable setting at the lowest possible cost available to you.
What Is Multiple Sclerosis?
Multiple sclerosis causes inflammation and damage to the protective covering of the brain and spinal cord's nerve fibers (axons), known as myelin because the immune system mistakenly attacks these structures. This affects the normal flow of electrical impulses along the nerves and causes symptoms such as fatigue, difficulty walking, numbness or tingling, muscle weakness, vision problems, coordination issues, and problems with balance and bladder control.
Diagnosing Multiple Sclerosis
First, a neurologist will perform an examination to assess neurological symptoms, including issues with coordination, balance, vision, and reflexes. During this exam, we will also discuss your full medical history, particularly as it pertains to your history of neurological symptoms or problems. A diagnosis may also include an MRI, blood tests to rule out other conditions, or a cerebrospinal fluid analysis.
Treating Multiple Sclerosis
Medications such as interferons, glatiramer acetate, dimethyl fumarate, fingolimod, and corticosteroids may be used to treat MS. Doctors also take the patient's specific symptoms into account to prescribe drugs that can help manage these symptoms. Managing the disease is crucial in slowing its progression. OCREVUS® is an infusion therapy that shows a lot of promise.
How OCREVUS® Works
B cells are integral in the development of MS. The B cells become activated and generate antibodies that attack the myelin sheath surrounding the nerve fibers in the central nervous system. CD20, a protein that is located on the surface of B cells, is a critical component of OCREVUS® infusion therapy.
OCREVUS® binds to CD20 on B cell surfaces, leading to their elimination. This results in a decrease in the number of B cells in the bloodstream and central nervous system, significantly lowering the production of antibodies that target the myelin sheath. By specifically targeting CD20-expressing B cells, OCREVUS® contributes to the slowing of the progression of MS and reduces the frequency and severity of relapses.
What to Expect?
Each OCREVUS® infusion treatment takes about two to four hours at our practice. Typically, patients come in for their first two doses, two weeks apart. After that, treatment is usually performed every six months. Your neurologist will prescribe your infusion therapy dosage and schedule.
