Rare Disease Infusion Therapy

If you have a rare disease like myasthenia gravis, Hemophilia B, neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder, thyroid eye disease, or others, you may feel like there aren’t any effective treatment options on the market. At CPS Infusion, we offer IV infusion therapy for rare diseases so FDA-approved medications can be delivered directly to your bloodstream during a convenient appointment at our practice. We invite physicians to learn more about our referral process and medication options, and patients can contact us to learn more or schedule an appointment after they have been approved for IV infusion therapy.

Rare Diseases Infusion Therapy Can Treat

Generalized myasthenia gravis is a rare autoimmune disorder; it impacts the voluntary muscles that allow us to move the arms, legs, and face; it can also make it difficult to breathe or swallow. The condition develops when the immune system mistakenly attacks key cells and proteins, disrupting the usual communication between the nerves and muscles.

People with gMG experience symptoms like muscle weakness and challenges making certain movements. Because it's a chronic condition, effective, ongoing treatment like IV infusion therapy is critical in managing gMG.

Hemophilia B, also known as Christmas disease, is a genetic disorder that is extremely rare and affects the blood's ability to clot due to a deficiency in clotting factor IX. Clotting factors are proteins critical to the blood clotting process, which helps control bleeding. In people with hemophilia B, the lack of sufficient factor IX impairs the formation of stable blood clots, leading to prolonged bleeding episodes.

Caused by a mutation in the F9 gene, which is located on the X chromosome, hemophilia B typically affects men. However, women can carry the gene, but typically do not experience symptoms.

Prolonged bleeding is the main symptom of hemophilia B; this can occur on its own or following minor injuries. Internal bleeding may also occur, potentially impacting joints, muscles, and organs. To manage this condition, many doctors and patients are turning to IV infusion treatment for hemophilia B.

A chronic autoimmune and neurodegenerative disorder, multiple sclerosis (MS) affects the central nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord. In people with MS, the immune system mistakenly attacks the myelin, the protective covering of nerve fibers, leading to inflammation and damage. This disruption interferes with the normal transmission of electrical impulses along the nerves.

The symptoms of MS vary depending on the location and extent of nerve damage. Common symptoms include weakness, numbness, tingling, poor coordination, vertigo, difficulty walking, vision loss, difficulty speaking, fatigue, mood problems, and cognitive impairments. IV infusion therapy has been shown to be a promising treatment for multiple sclerosis.

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a rare autoimmune condition that mostly affects the optic nerves and spinal cord, though other parts of the central nervous system (CNS) may be affected as well. The disease is characterized by damage to critical components of the CNS, including the myelin sheath, nerve cells, and astrocytes. This damage is often caused by the presence of anti-AQP4 antibodies, which mistakenly attack healthy cells.

Key symptoms of NMOSD include optic neuritis, leading to inflammation of the optic nerves and resulting in vision impairment or loss; patients may also experience transverse myelitis, which involves inflammation of the spinal cord, causing weakness, numbness, and, in some cases, paralysis. Patients can undergo IV infusion therapy for NMOSD to treat the symptoms and control the condition.

Primary immunodeficiency diseases (PIDD) lead to increased vulnerability to infections; they refer to a group of disorders caused by defects in the immune system. These conditions are typically inherited and result from mutations in the genes that regulate the development and function of the immune system. These genetic mutations can impact various parts of the immune system, including proteins, white blood cells, and antibodies.

With over 400 different forms of primary immunodeficiency diseases, specialized treatment is critical because each type is associated with its own unique genetic causes and symptoms. IV infusion therapy for primary immunodeficiency diseases can be effective in helping patients achieve a better quality of life.

Medication:

Thyroid eye disease (TED), also known as Graves' disease, is an autoimmune thyroid disorder that mostly causes issues with the eyes. Overproduction of the thyroid hormone causes the immune system to target and attack the healthy tissues around the eyes. Symptoms of thyroid eye disease include bulging eyes, inflammation of the eyelids, difficulty moving the eyes, double vision, sensitivity to light, eye redness and pain, dry eyes, and excessive tearing. If you have thyroid eye disease, consider IV infusion therapy as a treatment option.
